When the sun sets on the tallest mountain on Earth, you've already been standing in the dark at its foot for some time. Sometimes a lucky watcher sees the peaks take a golden red shine as the light recedes over them into a display like a king's jewelled crown
A hard wind carried frozen air down from the snowy caps to our cheeks and noses and fingertips, and we watched the reflection turn to shadow from around corners of buildings and through paneless windows.
The air was still the next morning. Even in the darkness, the presence of a giant is unmistakable.
